Stain Removal Tips

Art smocks are provided for every student in the art room.  However, sometimes accidents happen.  Here are some tips that might help on laundry day.

Markers

Rinse stain from the fabric with cold water until no more color is being removed. Place fabric on paper towels and saturate with alcohol using a cotton ball to blot the stain. Replace the paper towels as often as needed. Wash in hot water with laundry detergent and bleach and rinse in warm water.

Watercolors

If stain is noticed before laundering, rinse with hot water. Wash in hot water with laundry detergent for about 12 minutes (heavy soil cycle). Soak in a solution of Oxi Clean or Clorox 2 according to the instruction on the container for one hour. Repeat laundry cycle. Repeat laundering should remove any residual stains.

Tempera Paint

If you notice the stain before laundering, rinse stain with warm water to remove excess paint, work hand soap directly into any leftover stain and rinse. Wash immediately in hot water with laundry detergent for about 12 minutes (heavy soil cycle). If stain remains, soak in OxiClean or Clorox 2 solution, according to the instructions on the container, for one hour and repeat laundry cycle. Repeated laundering should remove any residual stains.

Chalk

Place stained area on paper towels and blot with alcohol. Wash in hot water with laundry detergent and Clorox 2 or OxiClean powder and rinse in warm water. Repeat as necessary until all the stain is removed.

Oil Pastels

Scrape off as much oil pastel as possible.  Use ice cubes to chill the oil pastel making it easier to scrape away.  Saturate a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and blot the stained area.  If stain persists, rub liquid dish soap into the stain and wash as normal.  Repeat as needed.

Dryer Drum:  Wipe the stained area with paper towels to remove as much oil pastel as possible.  Use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser per the manufacturer's direction.  Clean, dry rags can be placed in the dryer and ran through a cycle to remove any remaining stain.  Repeat as needed.

*These stain removal tips are not 100% guaranteed.  Success depends largely on the color of the paint, the type of fabric, and how quickly the stain is treated.  Do not wash and dry the garment before treating the stain because heat will cause it to set.  Good Luck!
