Scribble Creatures!

I'm Not Just a Scribble is an endearing story about different emotions by Diane Abler. On our first day of art, we talked about all the different emotions we can experience throughout any given day, then created our own scribble creatures using crayons, markers and eyeball stickers.

Collaborative Circles

These stunning banners began with a simple shape that even the youngest artists know how to create-a circle (the universal symbol of unity). Working together with all the students in the class, layers of circles and colors were added to produce a much more complex design.

The collaborative process is so powerful because everyone contributed equally and enthusiastically. By working together we were able to eliminate the creative block, develop our own artistic intuition and build self confidence.

Painted Collage Paper

Third graders were introduced to painting procedures in the art room by creating several sheets of painted papers. These papers will be saved for future collage projects. This method of using painted collage papers can be found in many popular children's books by the author/illustrator Eric Carle.

During this lesson, we covered many important art room procedures. We learned how to wear an art apron, how to hold a brush, how to keep our hands clean, how to put our wet paintings on the drying rack and how to clean our tables.

Geometric Shape Art

Shape is one of the Elements of Art. Artists use all kinds of shapes to create art. For this art activity, we created colorful backgrounds using bleeding tissue paper and water, then drew shapes on top with thick black markers. We focused on drawing just geometric shapes-like squares, circles and triangles, etc. To create contrast, we carefully colored in the negative spaces around our shapes.

Matisse Leaf Collages

The French artist Henri Matisse is famous for his brightly colored paintings as well as his bold paper cut collages. Third grade artists studied several of Matisse’s paper cut collages, paying close attention to his use of bright colors and organic shapes. Matisse loved to mix both geometric and organic shapes by cutting them directly out of brightly colored papers. This is often referred to as "drawing with scissors."

We learned how to cut organic leaf shapes out of construction paper, then framed our creations in lovely oil pastel and watercolor resists.

Folk Art Landscapes

A landscape is a work of art that focuses on natural scenery. Third graders drew these charming landscapes using black markers. They focused primarily on the element of space to show depth and distance in their work. They learned that drawing objects really small at the top of their papers makes them look as is if they are really far away, while drawing big objects at the bottom of the page makes them look close by.

Soft chalk pastels in either warm or cool colors were used to complete these masterpieces!

Hot Chocolate Mugs

Heather Galler is a contemporary folk artist from Rochester, New York. She is best known for her whimsical style that incorporates bold patterns and colors.

Third graders drew large 3D coffee mugs with ink filled daubers and then created a variety of patterns using shapes and lines with neon oil pastels. A layer of liquid watercolors was added on top to complete these masterpieces!

Winter Self Portraits

A collage is an artwork made from scraps of paper that have been cut and rearranged.  Third graders created these delightful self portrait collages by using scraps of painted papers.

First we learned how to mix colors to create the perfect skin tone. Then we thought of different accessories to wear to keep ourselves warm and cozy while enjoying the cold weather. Check out the wide variety of hats and scarves we created in these wintry collages- so many colors and patterns!

Value Landscapes

Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Third graders explored value by mixing white and black paints together to create a variety of grays. Next we added trees on top to create winter landscapes.

Primary Color Scrape Art

When you mix primary colors together you can create the secondary colors: orange, green, and purple. We had a lot of fun experimenting with mixing colors by scraping our colors together with pieces of cardboard.
