Beginning of the Year Self Portraits

On our first day in the art room, we drew self portraits using crayons. We will save these pictures and draw another self portrait in the spring. Then we will compare both of them to see how much we've grown as artists.

Paper Sculptures

Kindergarteners created these whimsical sculptures with paper strips and a lot of imagination! First we learned the difference between 2D and 3D art by looking at images of paintings and sculptures. After a class discussion, we discovered that paintings are flat and sculptures stand up so you can view them from all angles. We made our own sculptures by folding, bending, twisting and turning colorful paper strips. It was tricky to add just the right amount of glue to make sure everything stayed in place.

Color Collages

Kindergarteners practiced cutting geometric and organic shapes out of colorful scraps of paper. By limiting the color palette, we were able to focus on holding our scissors safely, joining our shapes with just the right amount of glue, all while creating an aesthetically pleasing design.

Line Art

Straight, curvy, zig zag, broken-these are just a few types of lines that we learned about in the art room. Using paint daubers, we drew lots of different lines to create an interesting design that fills the page.

Line is just one of the many Elements of Art we will be learning about in Kindergarten this year.

Shape Paintings

Triangles, squares, circles and rectangles. What do all of these have in common? That’s right, they’re all shapes! Shape is an important element of art. Kindergarteners learned that when you draw a line and connect the ends, it creates a shape! We learned about several different shapes and how to tell them apart by counting all of their sides.

Focusing on keeping our paintbrushes pointy and clean, we created a painting using shapes. We completed these masterpieces by stamping black lines and circles on top.

Color Mixing

Do you know what happens when you mix blue and red paint together? How about what happens when you mix yellow and blue together? The kindergarteners do!

Using just the primary colors, we mixed our colors using texture scrapers to reveal the secondary colors.

Pumpkins

How can you paint an orange pumpkin when all you’ve got are the primary colors? Don’t know? Just ask a kindergartener! They discovered that mixing yellow and red makes orange!

After the field trip to the pumpkin patch, we painted our own pumpkins in art class. When they dried, we cut them out then used our painted papers from the previous lesson to make a collage!

Fall Landscapes

Kindergarteners created these lovely fall landscapes with paint sticks and watercolor paints. First we drew a horizon line with a green paint stick. Then we colored our grass in by overlapping two different shades of green. Next we drew several trees with a brown paint stick. We finished these masterpieces with watercolors. We tried really hard to keep the hairs on our paintbrushes pointy as we tiptoed in our tree tops.

Fish Collages

Focusing on the elements of art, kindergarteners were able to create their own ocean scenes.

First we drew ocean lines with paint sticks. We made sure to create a variety of lines and overlap them to mimic waves. Then we added sand and seaweed to the ocean floor. We focused on cutting curvy lines and using our glue carefully.

We created a fancy fish using our painted collage paper from earlier in the year. We discussed how artists can use the element of shape to create all the parts of a fish.

Winter Landscapes

Kindergarten created these stunning winter landscapes over the course of several art classes. First, we looked at Vincent Van Gogh's masterpiece Starry Night and painted night time skies. We mixed blue, purple and black paint then used the backs of our paintbrush handles to draw swirls directly into the wet paint.

Next we learned about tints and painted beautiful snowy hills by mixing turquoise and white paint. Once these paintings we dry, we cut them out and glued them to our night skies. Then we created the illusion of depth by creating houses of different sizes using construction paper.

Snow friends

These charming snow people were created by Kindergarten artists in two art classes. First we painted the bodies for our snow people with sponges to make them look like fluffy snow. Next we read the book Snowballs by Lois Ehlert for inspiration. This book has several illustrations of cool snow people who are decorated with all sorts of wacky objects. We embellished our them with fabric pieces, ribbons, buttons, foam bits, and construction paper scraps.

Winter Landscapes

Kindergarteners learned all about landscape art while creating these delightful winter scenes.  First we painted a big yellow sun somewhere on our papers. We discovered how to make several shades of orange by mixing magenta and yellow paint together. Next we painted glowing rings of our new color creations around the sun.  We used sponges to dab white snow on the ground.  To complete our creations, we printed black trees with small pieces of cardboard.
